NICHOLS ENGINEERING / MANUFACTURING CAM DATA
for INDIAN SCOUT and CHIEF MOTORCYCLES
All cams are designed and manufactured using a CADD/CAM systems we have incorporated into our cam design ramps as used in all modern engines to reduce the noise and cam and lifter wear. We also balance our cams which makes your engine runs smoother, adds horsepower and reduces wear of cams / lifters. These features are not found in any other cams for motorcycles.

Explanation of common CAM TERMS used by cam users and manufacturers:

No. 1
L.S.A. Lobe Separation Angle. This is the angle when the piston is T.D.C. To when the cam is at full lift, all stock Scouts have 102 LSA L.C.A. Lobe Center Angle is used for this angle L.C. Lobe Center is also used for this angle

No. 2
Duration starting at .050 lift and ending at .050. The .050 to full lift is where the Prime work is done by the valve opening, and is standard by the Cam industry.

No. 3
Duration using .006 & .008 feeler gage, total valve opening.

No. 4
Ramp; A specially added feature designed on the base circle. Basically it is a taper that starts to lift 20 to 30 degrees before the cam begins to actually lift. This is .020 below the base circle, and also applies to the opening and closing of the valve. The reason for ramps is to reduce Cam and lifter roller wear, and reduce tappet noises.

NOTE: NICHOLS DESIGNED CAMS CANNOT BE GROUND ON CAM GRINDERS! REASON IS 6”in. DIA. IS SMALLEST DIA.. ALL OUR HOOK RADIUS’S ARE SMALLER THEN 3” RADII . THIS ALLOWS MORE VALVE LIFT DURATION, WHICH IS NOT POSSIBLE WITH OTHER CAM MAKERS.
